Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
